The Assignment Editor, ESPN China partnership with Tencent will work with social media, affiliates and other networks to obtain permission to use video and sound from other outlets on ESPN platforms. He/she understands basic rights and clearances issues. He/she will hire camera crews, satellite trucks, and studios, and arranges feeds and/or transfer of materials. The Assignment Editor will coordinate the efforts of freelance and staff producers and associated production/technical personnel to provide video and audio sports/news material for ESPN platforms. He/she will Handle all ancillary crew needs, such as parking, credentials, phone lines, and permits. The Assignment Editor will participate in strategic editorial and logistical planning of coverage. He/she will work with the senior assignment editor on specific sports and/or show assignments. He/she acts as the liaison between the Assignment Desk and Media Assets, Media Operations, and Transmission. The shifts will include nights and weekends.
Responsibilities
• Reacts immediately to breaking news and requests; gathers story-related materials (sound and video) in a timely manner
• Clears social media content for ESPN platforms
• Gathers and enters transmission information (satellite, fiber, cable) for televised games
• Hires freelance ENG and SNG crews
• Possesses depth of knowledge in fiber, satellite, cellular, FTP, and viral newsgathering procedures
• Coordinates game and studio events, including booking transmission needs (TVU/satellite/fiber), and promotes synergy between game and studio productions
• Works well in a team setting, shows initiative and problem-solving skills; takes direction from assignment desk management, coordinating producers, news editors, producers and senior editors
• Stays informed and up-to-date on sporting events and has above-average sports knowledge
Basic Qualifications
• Strong bilingual Mandarin/English speaking/writing skills
• Superior interpersonal and communication skills, with the capacity to handle high-volume email and phone traffic
• Demonstrated initiative and positive, solution-oriented outlook
• Advanced ability to organize and prioritize
• Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
• Working knowledge of television production and electronic and social media newsgathering
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs: Outlook, Excel, Word
• Unparalleled knowledge of the China market
Preferred Qualifications
• Three-plus years' experience in a television-related field
• Extensive knowledge of sports such as basketball, soccer, boxing, golf, tennis, auto racing and all major American professional sports
Required Education
• Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, TV Production, Communications or a related field, or its equivalent
Preferred Education
• Master's Degree in related field
