Men’s Health, the world’s leading health and wellness brand for men, is searching for a smart, energetic, forward-thinking features director to join the team in the New York office. The job demands proven experience generating ideas, crafting thoughtful article proposals, assigning work to a network of writers, coordinating with art, and landing complicated packages on deadline. We need an editor with talent for managing multiple projects while working both independently and collaboratively in a high-energy environment. We need an editor who can think creatively about how to tell stories in a variety of formats — online, with video, data visualization, and in ways that make our readers act and feel included in a community.
The ideal candidate is well-read to the point of exhaustion, a literary enthusiast with a knack for spotting rookie writers and the chops to help sculpt their work. He or she has an eye for the unique, and can channel our readers’ core concerns in unexpected ways that break through the din. He or she will be able to think visually, too—to excite interest in great writing and service.
Responsibilities
include:
Generate timely, compelling story ideas
Write and top edit original stories
Recruit new writers and assign stories
Work closely with the art and photo departments to determine the visual approach to a story
Line edit, write headlines and captions, work with top editors
Incorporate fact-checking changes, proof finals, and generally shepherd the story to completion
Willingness to collaborate and contribute to the digital team and other areas under the brand umbrella
Willingness to commute between our two office locations
The ideal candidate will possess:
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism or Communications
At least five years of experience writing or editing at a magazine, website, or digital product
A passion for the Men’s Health lifestyle, including health, fitness, food, style,
Effective communication skills and a collaborative work style
Strong time management skills essential
Strong interpersonal skills
Be comfortable representing Men’s Health in conferences, on the radio, and on television, as needed
